The Risk Behind Going Viral
Over the years, TikTok has been the main platform to promote your restaurant or food brand, one short clip can bring massive engagement and customers will be lined up around the corner the next day. However, this also means that the downside is how fast a video or comment can ruin a business's reputation.
Negative reviews on TikTok can have the same if even more impact on a restaurants reputation as a positive review. A negative video can reach millions of people within a few hours and before the restaurant even has time to reply, it's too late. The control is never in the restaurants hands and a simple mistake can be the reason behind severe customer loss. It's shows how powerful social media is when it comes to marketing, regardless of if its positive or negative.

Why Negative Content Spreads So Quickly
Emotional engagement is a common phenomenon in negative food reviews on TikTok. When a customer clearly shows frustration, disappointment, and anger it gives the video more attention than a neutral reaction would. Us humans are naturally more intrigued and drawn to strong reactions and emotions. What usually happens when someone posts a food review is that discussion is being caused. Regardless of what the negative experience is, whether its disappointing food or poor service, people like to jump in. The comment sections are usually filled with similar experiences and people relating to the frustration of the creator and warning other consumers to not go. When a lot of people engage with a TikTok, it boosts the algorithm and the post gets more visibility and will show up on more people's feed.
The Role of Perceived Authenticity
I've discussed in other blog posts how food reviews on TikTok are more raw and authentic than sponsored ads. This sadly applies when the review is negative, and people take the negative reviews very seriously because they trust the creator. Negative reviews on TikTok are honest and unfiltered and a lot of viewers appreciate honesty and critical opinions over sponsored promotional content. This can obviously be a bad thing as well, one authentic negative review from a trusted creator can overpower multiple positive reviews because it's "real" and is coming from someone a lot of people respect and trust. Most of the time the negative review is based on a small mistake or something specific to one location but viewers will apply this to the whole business, which is a problem.
My Analysis: A Shift in Control
This negative virality shows how control has shifted from the businesses hands to the consumers. In the past a business has been responsible for creating a good brand image, but now the consumer is controlling how others view a business without even trying it first. Perception has become reality and now the business need to do more than just advertise themselves right. TikTok is powerful because anyone can shape public opinion, one emotional and compelling story about a business can draw massive attention and reach more people than the businesses marketing efforts ever did.
I've personally seen negative experiences and reviews about businesses without proof that has led to massive hate trains on the business page and socials. People will go as far as finding personal information about owners and employees, and their family members to get them fired over mistakes they usually can't control. To me this is absurd, but sadly something I witness very often. At the end of the day no one is perfect and we all deserve some grace, no one deserves to get their livelihood taken away because of a negative review online.
Final Thoughts
FoodTok has brought great opportunities for restaurants to gain attention and customers, but there is always a downside and negative virality clearly shows how fast a negative review can setback a business overnight. Restaurants have to be more mindful and know that every customer interaction can potentially be public and retold on the internet. Reputation isn't longer something that is built over time by a business marketing efforts, one singular negative review can take away a lot of hard work in short amount of time.
